Proceso de la Demanda de Nulidad de
Matrimonio
(Proceedings of a Suit for Nullity of
Marriage)
This rare document dates back to 1647. It is the handwritten
record of the proceedings of a legal separation suit or a demand for
nullity of marriage filed by a principala, Doņa Maria Mutia,
against her husband, the Maestre de Campo Don Bernardo Dimabassa,
who did not want the separation. He alleged she would not live with
him while she presented witnesses to show he was an alcoholic prone
to violence. Decision was rendered by Don Juan Vazquez, Vicar of the
Commissary of the Holy Office and of the Inquisition in favor of
Doņa Maria, who was cleared of excommunication.
Aside from its interesting provenance, the document itself is
significant as it bears signatures in characters no longer used
today.
