This month, the Filipinas Heritage Library holds a series of activities to commemorate the 25th death anniversary of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.
On August 21 FHL will host a talk on Ninoy’s contributions to Philippine history. To be led by Bam Aquino, former chair of the National Youth Commission and Ninoy’s nephew, the lecture is a part of the Library Link Conference.
Also, an exhibit of Ninoy images, as captured by various Filipino photographers, will run at the FHL Alcove.
Some of the most iconic photographs of Ninoy Aquino—the ones taken at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport on August 23, 1983, when he was assassinated—were captured by the late photojournalist Wille Vicoy. This August, these and other important photographs from the Willie Vicoy Special Collection are presented by FHL’s Retrato Photo Archive.
Considered as one of the Philippines’ foremost photojournalists, Vicoy was a Reuters photographer during the Vietnam War. His Vietnam images appeared in various international publications, including the covers of both Time and Newsweek. He also captured on film many of the key people and moments in Philippine history. He took on other dangerous assignments, such as documenting military and guerrilla activity in rural areas. In April 1986, while covering the encounters between the military and the New People’s Army in Cagayan province, Vicoy, along with another journalist, was killed in an ambush.
The FHL Retrato Photo Archive has, in its collection, 700 photos taken by Vicoy. Visit FHL today to see the work of a legendary photojournalist.
