Filipinas Heritage Library and the National Book Development Board began their celebration of the 11th Philippine Book Development Month this week with lectures for public and private librarians, school librarians, and historians.
More than fifty librarians from all over Metro Manila attended the two-part lecture last June 4. Troy Lacsamana of the Quezon City Public Library, Evelyn Nabus of the Marikina City Library, and Fe Abelardo of the National Library tackled the procedures for setting up and animating community libraries. In the afternoon, Zarah Gagatiga from Xavier School conducted a lecture workshop on gaining government and non-government support for libraries.
Supplemental lectures on how to promote books and reading to kids, teens, and adults, and how to motivate them to use the library were held on June 6. Guest speakers were Ani Almario of Adarna House, Inc. and Maritoni Ortigas of FHL.
On June 7, May Jurilla, PhD talked about the story of the book in the Philippines. The lecture explored the development of book production in the country, as well as the role books played in shaping our culture and nation.
