The Alcove has been renamed The Alcove Perspective and is pleased to announce its expansion. Aside from the
photography exhibits and workshops, we are initiating another exciting project—THE ALCOVE PERSPECTIVE: REFERENCES.
This pocket library houses a special collection of photography-related books, magazines, and other
publications. It is open to the general public for a minimal fee. With this endeavor, we want to encourage everyone to
learn more about photography. Donations in cash or in kind, such as related titles, are most welcome.

Primer on Lighting + Lighting for Portrait
Photography August 22 and 29, 2010 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Learn about photographic lighting and be able to apply it immediately for portrait photography in just two days!
Day 1-Primer on Lighting will discuss lighting concepts and techniques. It will enable the participants to learn the
fundamental principles of lighting, master the primary controllable characteristics of light , and become familiar with the different
lighting tools used in the studio and on location.
Day 2-Lighting for Portrait Photography will cover the following topics:
- Light metering and ratio control
- Lighting set ups
- Lighting and other studio equipment needed in taking portraits
- Lighting approaches for the key light (broad, short, split, butterfly)
- Lighting roles in portraiture
+ formal portrait
+ fashion and beauty
+ high key
+ low key
Requirement
- Basic photography knowledge
- Camera, preferably digital SLR
- Exposure-flash meter, tripod (optional)

In this crash course, Jay Alonzo will emphasize light as the supreme tool in photography. He will equip participants with an in-depth
knowledge of lighting design and control, which will serve as a good foundation when shooting for people, product, food, and other
commercial applications.
To immediately apply the newfound knowledge, Jay will guide participants in systematically setting up lights and “reading” lighting
conditions to achieve best lighting design and exposure for portrait photography.
Specializing in people photography, Jay has taken photographs for the talents’ portfolio of a local modeling agency, worked with movie
production companies on their cinema posters and publicity photos, and done celebrity shoots for High Life magazine, a Business Day
publication.
Workshop fee, discount, and freebies
Workshop fee is P4,000 inclusive of handouts, studio equipment use, model’s fee, lunch, and certificate.
A discounted course fee of Php 2,200 will be applied to previous Primer on Lighting participants who wish to join the second day
only. Payment may be made in cash or check at the library or through bank deposit.
Due to the limited number of slots, interested participants are requested to pre-register by paying at least P1,000 (non-refundable)
on or before August 14. Those who pay in full on or before the deadline will get a 5 percent discount.

Digital 101: Photography and the Computer August
24, 26, September 2, 7 and 9, 2010 6-9 p.m.
This workshop is designed for digital camera users who want to learn the basics of photography. It discusses the
following:
- Factors affecting photographic output
- Basic understanding of light
- The digital camera and its functions
- Exposure setting
- How to see and take better pictures
- Basic image and output manipulation
The workshop entails shooting assignments, working in a digital darkroom, and a photo clinic.

Jay Alonzo has been teaching photography for more than 14 years and is considered one of the country's leading photography
instructors. Since 2001, he has been conducting photography classes at The Alcove (Filipinas Heritage Library's photography nook) and
for a wide range of clients such as the Kraft Foods, HSBC, Liwayway Marketing, Holcim Philippines, Pilipinas Shell, Procter & Gamble,
Microsoft, and the Department of Agriculture.

Writing Women of the 1920s
The works of Filipino women writers in English began to
flourish in the 1920s. In 1925, Paz Marquez Benitez’s
“Dead Stars”, widely regarded as the first modern
Filipino short story, was published in the Philippines
Herald Magazine. According to the Filipino Heritage Series,
the publication of the story ushered in “a period of greater
development in writing in English by Filipinos.”
