ANNOUNCING THE ALCOVE
PERSPECTIVE
The Alcove has been renamed The Alcove Perspective and is pleased to announce its expansion. Aside from the
photography exhibits and workshops, we are initiating another exciting project—THE ALCOVE PERSPECTIVE: REFERENCES.
This pocket library houses a special collection of photography-related books, magazines, and other
publications. It is open to the general public for a minimal fee. With this endeavor, we want to encourage everyone to
learn more about photography. Donations in cash or in kind, such as related titles, are most welcome.

Digital 101: Photography and the
Computer Weeknight batch: February 8, 9, 11, 16 and 18 (6–9p.m.) Weekend batch: February 20 and 27 (9a.m.–5p.m.)
This workshop is designed for digital camera users who want to learn the basics of photography. It discusses the
following:
- Factors affecting photographic output
- Basic understanding of light
- The digital camera and its functions
- Exposure setting
- How to see and take better pictures
- Basic image and output manipulation
To further enhance the participants’ knowledge, the workshop will entail shooting assignments, critiquing, and working
in a digital darkroom and a photo clinic.
Requirement
Digital camera, preferably SLR
Venue
Filipinas Heritage Library, Makati Avenue, Ayala Triangle, Makati City (across from The Peninsula Manila)
Speaker
Jay Alonzo has been teaching photography for more than 13 years and is considered as one of the country's leading photography
instructors. Since 2001, he has been conducting photography classes at The Alcove (Filipinas Heritage Library's photography nook) and
for a wide range of clients such as the Department of Agriculture, Liwayway Marketing, Holcim Philippines, Shell, Procter & Gamble,
and Microsoft.
In between classes, Jay is involved in shooting for hotel, tourism, and restaurant businesses. Jay is currently a photo contributor
for High Life and Mabuhay (Philippine Airline's in-flight magazine).
Joining fee, discount, and freebies
A workshop fee of P4,000 includes handouts, meals, computer use, and certificate. Cash or check payment can be made at the library or
through bank deposit.
Due to the limited number of slots, interested participants are requested to register at least one week before by
paying at least P1,000 (non-refundable, full payment is due on the first day of class). A 5 percent discount will be given to those
who pay in full on or before the deadline.

Digital 102: Going Beyond the Basics March 9,
11, 16, 23, and 25, 2010 6–9 p.m.
This intermediate digital photography class refines the technical and aesthetic skills offered in our basic course. It
will focus on the more complex aspects of exposure, metering, lighting, perspective, and composition while improving photographic
concept and vision.
Develop your personal photographic style and come up with a good portfolio in this workshop!
As an added perk, the Alcove photo gallery will mount a solo exhibit for the workshop participant with the most
impressive portfolio.
Requirements
The participant should:
- Bring a digital SLR camera
- Have taken Digital 101 or an equivalent course
- Bring sample works (five to seven old or new works, printed, at least 5” x 7” in size)

In cooperation with The Alcove of the Filipinas Heritage Library, Jay Alonzo is offering another pioneering workshop in the country.
In this course, he will continue to share more in-depth theories and techniques in digital photography. He will also guide each
participant in building their own portfolio, with tips from guest speakers.

Writing Women of the 1920s
The works of Filipino women writers in English began to
flourish in the 1920s. In 1925, Paz Marquez Benitez’s
“Dead Stars”, widely regarded as the first modern
Filipino short story, was published in the Philippines
Herald Magazine. According to the Filipino Heritage Series,
the publication of the story ushered in “a period of greater
development in writing in English by Filipinos.”
