Filipinas Heritage Library hosts third LibraryLink Conference in October

In today’s increasingly fast-paced digital world, relevant issues concerning librarianship and information services are prevalent. The intellectual property rights (IPR) of authors, publishers, and other copyright owners are continuously violated due to the availability of copying, scanning, and Internet technologies in the country. These concerns will be the focus of the 3rd LibraryLink Conference entitled Beyond Librarianship: Information as a Way of Life to be held from October 17 to 19 at the Filipinas Heritage Library.

National Library of the Philippines Director Antonio Santos will be the event’s keynote speaker. Other speakers include Lowe Philippines President and Chief Creative Officer Leigh Reyes, Philippine Daily Inquirer Director for Mobile and Books JV Rufino, Rappler.com founder and CEO Maria Ressa, National Book Development Board (NBDB) of the Philippines Director Andrea Pasion-Flores, TradeChannel Philippines Managing Director Nelson Co, and USA Department of State Information Relations Officer Myra Michele Brown.

They will lead discussions on the relevance of libraries and librarians in the digital age, social media and information overload, and how libraries can take advantage of social media and applications.

Joining them will be representatives from the Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society Inc. (FILCOLS), including Executive Director Alvin Buenaventura, Executive Officer for Licensing Napoleon Almonte, and Executive Director for Membership Beverly Siy.

FILCOLS, which is chaired Virgilio Almario, is the national reprographic rights organization of the Philippines. It is a nonprofit organization for authors, publishers, and other copyright owners. FHL seeks to become the first local private library accredited by the organization.

FILCOLS representatives will lead talks on library services for children and young adults in the digital age as well as the past and future of libraries. Moreover, the last day of the conference will focus on copyright and intellectual property issues on web content and digital library collections and how FILCOLS is addressing these problems.
