| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc - "...When World War II came along John [Mitchell] entered the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942. After a year in military training schools--six months of which was as an instructor, he was assigned to the test branch of the Air Force which was service testing the latest heavy bomber, the B-29 Superfortress. When the B-29 was committed to combat, Mitchell served overseas with the Third Photo Squadron which provided aerial photo reconnaissance for the 20th Air Force...
Discharged in 1950, Mitchell sought employment in civilian aviation and spent the following 30 years in that trade. he retired in 1980 and settled in Springfield, MO; and now he was able to devote more of his time to another attraction: writing and historical research. In addition to articles for periodicals, he has contributed to books by other authors.
Always intrigued by exploits of the 19th Bomb Group in the early phases of WWII, and noting that period had never been adequately covered by others, John began research by contacting veterans o the 19th and related units. Innumerable letters and phone calls over the years produced results that he has recorded in this book. To him it as been a labor of love--his desire is for others to derive the pleasure from reading it that he had in writing."
