Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - "The homecoming of the so-called second generation Filipino architects from their overseas studies, such as Andres Luna de San Pedro, Pablo Antonio, Fernando Ocampo, and Juan F. Nakpil, spurred a decadent new style in the late 1920s. Armed with innovative ideas and novel ways of utilizing non-classical ornaments that were in fashion with Euro-America, they were to challenge the dominance of Beaux Arts neoclassicism in the country and steer Philippine architecture to a new direction--the Art Deco. Originating in the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris, Art Deco was a form of stylization mediating the traditional and the avant-garde. Having gained global popularity thereafter, the term became a catch-all to designate the stylistic tendencies that appeared in the period between the two World Wars. It reached its pinnacle in the 1930s and was hailed as the Jazz Age Baroque, which permeated virtually every aspect of the design world, making its presence known in Hollywood films, fashion, applied arts, furniture, interior design, graphic design, industrial design, sculpture, painting and especially in architecture."
