Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc - "Purism is oftentimes related to the simple opposition to foreign words but there is as oftentimes no adequate discussion on the nature of the words being opposed and why they are being opposed. Which also means purism has complex reasons for being that's why there are many types of purism. Related to this... purism is not always bad nor the enemy of change. 'Tagalog purism' and the whole language issue within 1963-1973 might be regarded as a complicated but primary political struggle in the Philippines from then till now. Thus, and in the light of the events I presented, 'purism' is merely a mask on the more subversive movement to save English--the symbol for the power of the United States--against the intensifying anti-American nationalism symbolized by the rise and strengthening of the National language-based-on-a-native-language." -- Virgilio S. Almario
