Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - "The Maranao" is part of "The Philippine Story," an 8-part documentary series directed and produced by British film maker Hugh Gibb and became part of the Ayala Museum's collection in 1977, and now in the collection of Filipinas Heritage Library. This film focuses on the Maranao, an ethnolinguistic group whose name means "living near a lake." The group today numbers around 400,000, concentrated in Lanao del Sur. As the film opens, the Maranao are seen dancing to gong music on the banks of Lake Lanao. The camera then follows them worshipping in a mosque, and undertaking several crafts: carving wood, weaving mats, and making brassware. The highlight of the film is a royal wedding. It ends with a funeral scene. Originally in 16 mm film format, the film was digitized in 2020 with the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
