- General note - "Literacy studies in the Philippines have found vigor in an unprecedented interest in works from the region, and this book hopes to contribute to it. Some work has been done on the vernacular novel, but it has mainly been on specific writers. There is still a need to look at a bigger setting, to see the dynamics involving writer, socio-political-economic conditions, and the literary tradition. In this case I have researched on the prewar period, which is known as the 'Golden Age of Vernacular Literature" in the country. My focus is on 18 novels that became popular within two phases of the period: Propaganda and Satire (historical and sociological fiction_ and Escape and Entertainment (love stories, fantasy, detective fiction and adventure). After evaluation of these novels using a sociological approach, the study presents findings relating the literature to society, specifically on the 'spirit of the time,' social life, the role of the press, aesthetic values and symbolic action." [from the Preface]
