General Note
  • General note - Ruins of the church in Leon, after its destruction in 1945 during liberation and in 1948, the latter during an earthquake. Patterned after the cathedral of Leon, Spain, the Renaissance-Romanesque structure was one of the largest in Panay. It was built by Fr. Melquiades Arizmendi probably in 1869 when he first came and served as parish priest; subsequently enlarged and improved by Fr. Manuel Gutierrez in 1881. Fr. Manuel Castandiello built the stone parochial school and the parish cemetery during his term from 1893-1898. Leon originally called Camangdo, was given its new name by Fr. Agustin Castro after his province in Spain when he moved the parish to its present location some 4 kilometers from the original site. The parish was founded in 1740.
