General Note
  • General note - Looking squat and massive is the thick-walled church of Dueñas built by Fr. Nicolas Gallo shortly after he was named parish priest in 1878. Its simple facade is decorated with 3 saucer-like windows on the tympanum wall and gessoed insignia of the Augustinian Order (the transfixed heart with hat and tassels); flanking it is a pair of belltower, each approximating the dimension of the facade and having an octagonal upper deck capped by a pyramidal tin roof which terminates with a cruciform spire. The left tower was destroyed by the earthquake of 1948. Dueñas was founded in 1590 with the name of Sumandig and later Sibucao. It became an annex of Dumangas in 1603, independent in 1605, and an annex of Passi in 1668. A year after, Laglag -- the town''s third name given in 1608-was separated from Passi. It was given its present name of Dueñas by Fr. Florencio Martin after his home town in Spain. Fray Martin transferred the parish to its present site in 1849. He also built its wooden convent
