General Note
  • General note - The Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu More than a week passed after the discovery of the image of the Santo Niño, On May 8, 1565, Legazpi initiated the founding of the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines. On the site of the house where the miraculous image was found, the monastery of the Holy Name of Jesus was constructed. The image was therefore borught to its new shrine in a solemn procession. The first church made of light materials was built in 1571, it was only ten years later that the foundation of the first stone building was laid. It took 27 years for this church to be built. On May 8, 1628, the church and the convent were reduced to ashes and were rebuilt under the direction of Fray Juan de Medina, O.S.A. On January 16, 1740, the miraculous image was enthroned in the Augustinian church , in 1789, the church underwent renovation. One hundred years later , Fray Mateo Diez, O.S.A., did another renovation, Yet another renovation took place in 1960's , in preparation for the 400th anniversary of the Christianization of the Philippines. In 1965, the Papal legate to the 4th centenary celebrations Hildebrando Cardinal Antoniuitti, conferred the church the horrific title Basilica Minore upon the authority of Poper Paul VI. As a Basilica Minore , it is given precedence over other churches and other priveleges. Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos also declared it a national landmark. Both title befit this ancient shrine which is the oldest church in the Philippines. The present church is described as Baroque-Colonial with the facade adopting the Churriguerra style. .
