  • Title - Woman smoking a cigar, c1850
General Note
  • General note - Shown is a tobacco-puffing women wearing a sheer blouse of striped abaca cloth and a skirt held at the waist with drawstring. One side of the skirt hem is tucked into the waist thus producing a drape-effect on the side. Note her wooden clogs. Unlike their mestiza counterparts, the native women felt uncomfortabe wearing undergarments. This proctice led some religious to remark that the "indias knew no shame."
