Title Statement
  • Title - The Philippine terno, c1890
General Note
  • General note - Photo shows a Spanish mestiza wearing an elegant dress which was high fashion from the 1870s to the 1880s. The camisa of caƱamoso(babarahin) had wide sleeves with gathers along the upper armholes. Over the shouders was a mantilla or shawl decorated with heavy embroidery. The skirt made from heavy imported satin was cut in numerous panels and looked billowy due to a series of five to seven petticoats underneath.
