General Note
  • General note - Son of Emperor Nicolas I, succeeded March 2, 1855, crowned the following year. Married Princess Maria Alexandrovna in 1841 and on her death in 1880 remarried Princess Catherine Dalgorukow. Spread Russian influence in China by defeating latter in 1873. Entered Triple Alliance in 1872 with Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany and Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. Died from attempt on his life by a nihilist on March 13, 1881. Credited with having abolished serfdo and pushed Russia''s expansion in Asia.
