- General note - Born Nov. 28, 1857; died Nov. 25, 1885 of tuberculosis. Son of Queen Isabel II and Francisco de Asis. After abdication of Amadeo of Savory, proclaimed king on Dec. 28, 1874. Put down Carlist uprising two years later, proclaimed new Constitution granting greater political rights. First married Infanta Maria Mercedes in 1878, but she died several months later, and in 1879 married Archduchess Maria Cristina of Austria. Canovas del Castillo and Praxedes Sagasta headed cabinets during his reign.
