- General note - Blumentritt was the European scholar who became Rizal''s close friend and correspondent. A lecturer in geography and history at the Imperial Athenaeum at Leitmeritz in Bohemia (now Czechoslovakia), he published a number of historical studies on the Philippines. Rizal visited the Blumentritt family in Leitmeritz in April of 1886 enroute to Manila after his publication of the "Noli" in Berlin.
