- General note - Claveria was the governor-general of the Philippines from 1844 to 1849. He purchased the first steam war vessel of the Philippines (1848); conquered Balanguigui Island, for which feat he was given the title Conde de Manila; gave Spanish surnames to native Filipinos; and ordered the construction of sidewalks in the streets of Manila for the safety of pedestrians.
