  • Title - Simon Salazar de Anda
General Note
  • General note - Native of Subijana, Spain, born October 28, 1701. An auditor by profession; appointed by Audiencia Lieutenant governor general; escaped from Manila, Oct. 4, 1762 with the arrival of the British; established his capital in Bacolor, Pampanga, and had himself proclaimed governor. The British installed Archibishop Rojo as governor until his death; Governor (ad interim) October, 1762 to March 1764; received keys of Manila when the British left in April, 1764. Well received at the Spanish court on his return and made councilor of Castile; directed letter to King complaining of certain disorders in the Philippines enumerating among them a number against the friars, dated April 12, 1768; arrived at Manila as Governor in July, 1770; proceeded against predecessor and others; roused opposition of friars; reformed army and engaged in other public works; troubles with Moros continued; opposed King''s order of Nov. 9, 1774, to secularize curacies held by friars and the order repealed, Dec. 11, 1776. His administration was characterized by his energy, foresight, honesty and conflicts with the regulars; died October 30, 1776.
