- General note - Labezares came to the islands in 1542 as a member of the Villalobos expedition and returned in 1564 as Legazpi''s treasurer. In 1572, he succeeded Legazpi as governor. He introduced the encomienda system to reward worthy Spanish soldiers for their service to the Crown.
