His timely arrival saved Manila from Limahong; he was made maestro de campo in spite of his age (25 years); with Rajah Lakandola, drove Limahong from Pangasinan in March 1575; was the most popular figure among the Spaniards in the Philippines during his time. He died on March 11, 1576, and bequeathed his properties to Vigan natives. His skull was preserved as a relic by the people whom he befriended, and his body interred at San Agustin church in Intramuros.
