Title Statement
  • Title - Robert McCullough Dick
General Note
  • General note - As a young man, Dick worked for an Edinburg map-making company until he got sick of typhoid fever and lost his hair. His doctor advised him to take an extended sea voyage as the saltiness of the air would remedy his baldness. Dick migrated to the U. S. westcoast and sailed for Manila in 1900. He joined Manila Times as a reporter and subsequently got promoted as city editor. He was earning P550.00 a month when a new management decided to reduce his salary. He left the paper and in 1908 , he bought the bankrupt Free Pressand the first issue in English and Spanish came out on August 29. For having fought Japanese expansionism in print, he was arrrested and imprisoned in Fort Santiago during the Japanese occupation. As a fitting reward for his colorful journalistic career, Dick was the recipient of an award in 1957 from the National Press Club; the Ramon Magsaysay award for journalism and literature, in 1958; and the Philippine Legion of Honor, degree of commander on August 1, 1958. A heart failure traceable to an earlier bout with influenza and general debility due to old age caused his death on September 14, 1960, at the age of 87. He remained a bachelor and a British citizen. A Presbyterian, he was interred at the municipal cemetery of Malabon, Rizal.
