- General note - English navigator and privateer who made the first navigation of the world. In 1570-1572, he made 3 expeditions to the west Indies, plundering Spanish towns and ships. In 1595, he commanded an ill-fated expedition to the west Indies with Sir John Hawkins, and died abourd his own ship in 1596.
