- General note - King of Portugal, 1495-1521. Manuel''s reign was an era of exploration and discovery in Portugal''s history. Vasco de Gama, Trista de Cunha, Cabral, Albuquerque were among the navigators and explorers he sent to expeditions to discover and explore new lands and territories, etc. He was married thrice: to Isabella of Spain; Maria, her sister; and Leonora of Austria. He was born in 1469 and died in 1521.
