- General note - An eminent Jesuit meteorologist, Faura attracted worldwide attention with his accurate warnings of typhoons and the scientific recordings of earthquakes made at the Manila Observatory. His invention of the barometer named after him, which is still being used in thte Philippines, won for him the high respect of his colleagues in the scientific world. Born in Barcelona in 1840, Faura was assigned to Manila after his studies at the Seminary in Vich. He was teaching mathematics and physics at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila when he began studying cyclones in connection with his meteorological work to which he had devoted time and efforts. He founded the Manila Observatory in 1865 and was its first director for 32 years. In 1871, he sailed for Europe to study in Saint Cassien in France, to work with Secchi and Stonyhurst, and to attend as a delegate at the Meteorological Congress in Paris.
