- General note - Portuguese circumnavigator born in Oporto, Potugal, in 1493. In 1521, he landed in the Philippines while trying to find a route different from that of Balboa and Vasco de Gama, to the Spice Islands. Was at first well received by the Cebuanos, but was killed by Lapu-Lapu in Mactan island on April 27, 1521. His crew returned to Spain in 1523 on board the ship "Victoria".
