- General note - Born in Pradoluengo, Burgos, Spain, on March 10, 1875; studied Latin in Bilbao, philosophy and theology in the Burgos Seminary; finished his bachiller in Valladolid; received his Licentiate in Law at the Tribunal de la Rota; was provisor on Palencia for 12 years; and on August 24, 1862, he received the degree of doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Santo Tomas, Manila; became a member of the Vatican council; and for 13 years handled the church legal cases. He became Archbishop of Manila on May 29, 1862; published pastoral letters in Spanish and Tagalog lamenting and condemning the Cavite insurrection of 1872 especially the participation of the Filipino clergy; he led the families of Fathers Gomez, Burgos and Zamora in petitioning for clemency, but Governor General Rafael Izquierdo turned a deaf ear. In 1875, he resigned his position as Archbishop.
