General Note
  • General note - Born in the small town of Neda, near Ferrol, northwestern Spain, in the mid 1839. Served the Navy as a marine guard, distinguised himself in the service. Came to the Philippines in 1846 and engaged in hydrographical work, travelled the coasts of Luzon, the Visayas, Calamianes and Paragua, Mindanao and some islands in the south; fought against the Muslims; was in Balanguigui in 1848 and in Jolo in 1851. After 1869, he became chief of the Deposito Hidrografico de Madrid, which was visited by tha king, who on two occasions asked several questions regarding the Philippines, knowing that Montero had spent much of his time in the islands. He has served as vice-president in the Consejo de Filipinas simultaneously as chief of the Deposito in Madrid; was a captain of the navy and brigadier in the army; received the Gran Cruz de Isabel la Catollica; and was appointed military governor in Mindanao.
