- General note - Born in Federalsburg, Dorchester County, Maryland, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1884. He entered the U.S. Army in the same year as a 2nd Lieutenant, Ist Infantry; his first station was Arizona, where from 1885 to 1886 he was engaged in the campaign againt Geronimo, the Apache chief. In October, 1902, he was named military aide to Governor Taft, later to Governor Wright and Ide.
