- General note - Military governor of the Moro Provinces of Mindano and sulu from 1909 to 1916. Gen. Pershing came to the Philippines in 1902 as a 42 -year-old captain and veteran of the Apache and Sioux Indian campaign. He was assigned to take command of Camp Vicars in Lanao from where he launched punitive expeditions against inimical Maranao cottas including what was considered to be the most formidable in the region, the Taraka fort. He was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General by President Roosevelt in 1906 and named Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe in 1916.
