General Note
  • General note - Irish lawyer from California who joined the State National Guard and was commissioned colonel of the First California Volunteer Regiment in 1898. The regiment engaged Spanish troops in a sham battle in Tambo (now in ParaƱaque). Later Smith and his volunters fought against Filipino soldiers in Caloocan and Negros, where he became military governor. Being a Roman Catholic and conversant in Spanish, he developed friendship with the hacenderos and illustrados during his term as military governor of the island. He was appointed customs commissioner, member of the Philippine Supreme Court before finally succeeding Henry C. Ide as governor-general of the Philippines in 1906.
