- General note - The founder and publisher of the Manila Bulletin, which was established as a shipping and commercial guide and converted 12 years later into a morning daily. He was the son of Lafayette and Rachel Jane Highsmith-Taylor, born on December 5, 1875, in Flat Rock, Crawford County, Illinois. He came to the Philippines in 1898 as a member of the First Colorado Volunteer Infantry and discharged the following year. He then joined the Manila American and became its circulation manager and later, part -owner. He was married to Elisa Isabel Bogard.
