General Note
  • General note - American soldier who came to the Philippines in 1899 as a second lieutenant in the Fourth Infantry under General Lawton. Van Schaik fought in Batangas under General Bell during the campaign which resulted in the surrender of General Miguel Malvar. During his service in the Philippines, he was awrded two decorations by the U.S. Congress, namely, the Medal of Honor for distinguised gallantry in rescing from drowning of the soldiers of his company. He was appointed Captain of the Philippine Scouts, 1505-07, and simultaneosly Governor of Cavite. During his term he campaigned against the outlaws of the province as well as those in Laguna and Batangas. He became inspector of the Constabulary in 1908, and finally Governor of Mindoro from 1908 to 1912. He then went back to the U.S. and in1930,returned to Manila and served as an adviser to the Governor Generals (Dwight Davis and as late as Frank Murphy). Son of John and Fraces Eliza (Shaver) Ven Schaik, Louis was born on July 1, 1875 in Cableskill, New York. He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, was graduated from the Army School in 1921, the General Staff School in1922, and the Army War College in 1927. During the Japanese occupation he was interned in Baguio , and died the day following liberation in 1944.
