General Note
  • General note - Italian navigator, allegedly the person after whom America was named. Vespucci took part in several voyages to the New World, such as in1497, 1499, 1501, and 1503, and believed to have been a member of the expedition of Alonso de Ojeda, a Spanish explorer, to the northern coast of South America in 1499-1500. In his last two voyages, 1505 and 1507, he explored the Darian region. In 1508 he was appointed pilot major of Spain. He made ways and wrote accounts of his voyages which was published in 1507 by Martin Waldseemuler, a German geographer. Engraving by Crispin de Passe.
