| General Note |
- General note - Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (1519-1556) and King of Spain (Charles I) 1516-1556. Born in 1500, he was the son of Philip of Burgundy (Philip I of Spain) and grandson of Emperor Maximillian I and of Ferdinand and Isabella. In 1506 he inherited Burgundy and Netherlands and was crowned emperor in1521. For political reasons he was tolerant of the Protestants in Germany but persecuted heretics in Spain. As King of Spain, he repressed the revolt in Castille (1520-1521); extended New World possessions through conquest of Mexico by Cortes(1519-21) and of Peru by Pizarro (1531-35), and through expeditions and other conquests in Central and South America. In 1554 he relinquised the kingdom of Naples and of Netherlands the following year, both to his son Philip II, to whom he also turned over the control of Spain and the Indies in1556. To his brother Ferdinand, he relinquised the Imperial crown. He then retired to the monastery of Yuste in western Spain. Painting of Charles I as a young man is by Stringer and found in the collection of Borghese Gallery in Rome.
