General Note
  • General note - The first American naval officer to visit the Philippines, Wilkes arrived in 1842. In Jolo, he entered into an agreement with Sultan Jamal''ul Kiram I whereby U.S. vessels, commanders, and crew would be given full protection and trade privileges. The treaty was never invoked: no U.S. vessel visited Sulu until the coming of American forces in 1898.
