| General Note |
- General note - Photo reproduction of an oil portrait done by Diego Velasquez in 1620. The daughter of Pedro Garcia Yanez(and related to Juan de Vargas y Hurtado, governor general of the Philippines from 1678-1684) she was born in Toledo in 1555. She entered the Order of Saint Claire in 1570. With seven nuns from her order, she left for Manila where she founded the convent of La Concepcion in 1621. Mother Jeronima received twenty girls in her novitiate two months after it opened. Her order became so popular among the young Sanish women despite its strict and austere rules that soon complaints were received by diocesan authorities from the novices'' families. The Archbishop tried to regulate the zeal of this monastic life for women to the extent of excommunicating its abbess, but failed. Mother Jeronima died in 1630.
