General Note
  • General note - The Augustinian friar--the son of a peninsular and a native woman--who did extensive studies of Philippine plants and their therapeutic values. Mercado wrote "Libro de medicinales de esta Tierra y Declaraciones de las Virtudes de Arboles y Plantas que estan Islas Filipinas", a copy of which is in the Newberry Library in Chicago. With slight modifications, the work was published as a section of Fr. Manuel Blanco''s Flora de Filipinas. Mercado died in 1698 while he was a curate of Bauan, Batangas. He was fifty.
