- General note - Philip II succeeded Charles V as King of Spain in 1556 and ruled Portugal also as king from 1580 to 1598. After conceding the Moluccas to Portugal, he decreed the colonization of the Philippines. His decision to close Lisbon to the ships of the Netherlands, a Protestant country, led to Dutch expeditions to the East Indies in 1598 and, later to the Dutch blockade of Manila. This painting of Philip II is by Titian.
