| General Note |
- General note - Wilkes, the first American officer to visit the Philippines, arrived in 1842. In Jolo he entered into an agreement with Sultan Jamal''ul Kiram I: American vessels, commanders, and crews would be given full protection and trade privileges. The treaty was never invoked. No U.S. vessel visited Sulu until the coming of the American military forces in 1898.
