General Note
  • General note - Panoramic view of a thriving community that depends on lumber for its prosperity. Popularly called the "Timber City of the South," Butuan is situated along the Agusan river, in the flat area which is part of Agusan valley. To it go the products of upper Agusan for shipment abroad. The first seat of the government of Butuan was in Pinamangculan by the banks of the Masao river. It was moved to Baug, now barrio Magallanes, at the mouth of the Agusan river joining Butuan Bay. Later, the settlement was transferred to Lapaon, now Linungsuran in barrio Banza. Still troubled by floods, the next settlement in 1891 was on a higher place called Agao, which is the present site of the city. Among the founders were Bias Montilla, Sebastian Calo, Mamerto Sanchez, and a host of others. At the time of the arrival of the Spaniards in 1521, the king of Butuan was Raja Siaui (Siago). Butuan''s first Christian chieftain was Datu Silongan, who was later baptized as Felipe, who searched the upper reaches of the Agusan river for gold. Along with his brother Macara-ay, he came from Jolo. The American occupation of Butuan was easily effected and in accordance with Public Law No. 82, the first municipal election was held on March, 1902. It became a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 523 otherwise known as the City Charter of Butuan, which became effective on August 3, 1950.
