General Note
  • General note - One of the biggest lakes in the country, Mainit is located at the borderline of Agusan and Surigao provinces. Lake Mainit after a short rain often threatens to spill over, especially when its outlet somewhere in Tubay, Agusan del Norte, is clogged. It then takes some two or three months for the water to recede and diseases break out. From this basin of fresh water, countless species of fishes are caught daily for the markets of Agusan. Two 24-foot sharks and a huge crocodile were caught in 1962 in this lake. Famous long before the Commonwealth regime, Lake Mainit has been an unpublicized mecca of government officials during most of their southern trips. In 1938, President Quezon with General Vicente Lim and a number of government officials visited the lake and made an on-the-spot inspection of its potentialities as a tourist attraction and its possible development for industrial uses. The depth at the center is some 200 fathoms. In the shallower portion of the lake, the waters are murky and brownish but in the deeper part, it is dark-blue. The top layer of the water is warm and sulphuric, therefore its name, "Mainit." Many believe it is of the same size as Camiguin island and according to legend, the latter used to occupy the basin of the lake in pre-historic times.
