General Note
  • General note - Some 60 kilometers south of Manila on Tagaytay Ridge, 2,250 ft. above sea level, may be seen this breath-taking panoramic view of the island within a lake within an island. It is a natural cauldron ever on the brink of being set to a boil. Such has been Taal volcano since that fateful September 28 in 1966. It was then a picture of wrath and fury the like of which the volcano island inhabitants never dream of witnessing in their lifetime. Taal volcano spewed out of its newly-formed crater red hot molten lava that wrought unbridled destruction in the vicinity. Families fled the scene of havoc and pandemonium. Some were saved in the niche of time but many more failed to escape from the destructive reach of a volcano seized in convulsion. But during its moments of lull and inactivity Taal volcano betrays not the crumbling and churnings that go in her bowels. It presents a panoramic picture of outward calm and tranquility. However, minor eruptions characterized by emissions of smoke and ash clouds have become the come-on gimmick around which revolves the magnetic appeal of this tourist attraction. Not contented with viewing the active volcano from the Taal Volcano from the Taal Vista Lodge in Tagaytay City, many visitors choose to hire motor bancas just to watch at close range the minor tantrums of a restless volcano. Other try to set foot on the volcano island in spite of the restrictions and warnings issued by the Commission on Volcanology. Taal''s volcanic activity remains unpredictable and even volcanologists can, at best attempt guesses. But in the mystery, too, lies the beauty of nature''s handiwork. Volcano watching has become a favorite sport and has raked in a fortune for the tourism offices; foreign and local visitors have sat entrenched by the haunting beauty of volcanic pyrotechnics.
