Though tremors had started to be felt for a year, the volcano became exceptionally violent on 1 May 1871 hurling ashes that reached Mindanao, Bohol and Cebu. About 200 persons perished, and Catarman was totally destroyed and abandoned. Some areas in the island sank to considerate depth.
