| General Note |
- General note - Christian settlements in Camiguin, especially those facing the Mindanao coast, were under constant threat from Muslim attacks. Hence, the construction of watch towers overlooking the sea, like this one in Catarman, one of two remaining in the island of Camiguin. Before its destruction, Catarman was frequently invaded by Muslim warriors and each time were fought by the people of Panghiawan and Catibac. These frequent clashes made the town a dreaded place. In fact, the name Catarman came from the native wood "catagaman" which means "a place of fear." The look-out tower, built by the church founders, was also made of limestone.
