- General note - The place where the Monument to Magellan stands was believed once under water; the shoreline which is some distance from the memorial is defined by a continuous coral ledge. For about 100 yards towards the sea, wind and current has reclaimed the land, and farther out for some 200 yards a mangrove swamp, site of Pigafetta''s reefs, has grown. The waters are till only knee-deep and the historic Battle of Mactan must have been fought here.
