- General note - Cannons and bricks are remnants of the Spanish fort at the apex of the Cotabato village where the Rio Grande de Mindanao branches off into two arms toward the sea. It was not until 1861, after much fighting and several setbacks, that the place was fortified. By 1894, the Tumbao fort was garrisoned by one Spanish officer, 60 infantry and 6 artillery men.
