| General Note |
- General note - Located at the mouth of the Rio Grande de Mindanao, locally known as the Polangui river, this city is both the capital and the port for this province. The Spaniards called the place Cotabato from two Maguindanao words "Cotta Bato," meaning "stone fort." The original name for the place was Magindanao, which means "the place that has been inundated." In time the town came to be known as Cotabato, while the word Mindanao was applied to the whole island. Cotabato town, which was founded around 1862, was capital of Mindanao island for three years.
