Oyanguren was a former judge of Tondo (Manila) and a businessman who led the expedition to Davao at the end of June, 1848. The first Spanish village was named Nueva Vergara and the settlement consisted of around 800 soldiers, their families and other settlers, including Bagobos, Mandayas, Bilaans and Kalagans.
